Text from the email “This was taken last week on Old Northern Road Albany Creek, but not sure who by. It has about 2 tonnes of concrete blend and 200kg bags of cement in the back. A very expensive exercise, as a Department of Transport vehicle also arrived at some stage … probably to offload a hefty fine.”

I got my licence when I was 18, I had failed it the first time round, because I didn’t have enough practice with a manual. I then bought myself a little Ford Laser 1983 model, it was a great little car, only cost me about $5 a week to run. I remember I used to practice hill starts on my parents driveway, because it was so steep.

I moved down to Victoria after highschool and was driving along a country road which was gravel one day.
I remember looking down at the radio, I then looked up and I was heading towards an embankment.
Then I proceeded to put my foot on the brakes. I didn’t realise once you pressed down on the brakes that I wouldn’t be able to steer out of the situation I was in.
In that split second I knew I was going to hit the embankment. I remember everything going black and being flipped over about 1 and a half times.
My little car, that I had worked for 2 years for and had cost me $2,000 was now a right off. It was such a surreal feeling.
All my stuff from the car was strewn all of the dirt track. I remember unclipping myself from the seat belt and landed on the windscreen and crawled out of the car window.
I then proceeded to try and get help. I walked down a dirt drive way to where a caravan was, but no one was there. I then walked back up to where my car was, I was definetely in shock.
I couldn’t believe my little car was gone. About 15 minutes after the accident, an old guy drove up to the car and asked “Are you alright love?” I was like “No I just rolled my car”.
He then took me to the first farm house down the road. They called the tow trucks, the police and my boyfriend who I had only been dating for about a month.
The police officer then proceeded to tell me that I could be charged with dangerous driving. I was so upset and crying, it was the most horrible experience ever.
I thank God to this day that I got out ok. All I got was a little cut on my knee. I reckon I had a guardian angel looking over and protecting me.
My car got taken to a car wreckage place and my uncle who was really good with cars came and looked it over.
He was talking to the guys at the car wreckers and they said that there was car in their lot that was better off then mine and the girl had died in that accident.
It was the hardest thing that I have ever had to go through and I suffered post traumatic stress from it for a while. It was unfortunate for my boyfriend, because he was still going through the hooning stage. Every time I got in anyone’s car and they did the slightest thing in it, whether it be a slight quick take off etc, I would freak out, thinking that I was going to crash again.
The hardest thing too, was that I had moved 1,600 kms away from my parents, so it was really hard not to have them around.

Unfortunetely while getting my licence I didn’t do an Advance Driving course, because there was none running in my area. I wish I had done one, I think I could have avoided my accident if I had done one. But oh well you learn from these experiences. I am just so glad that I survived in one piece. This accident taught me a lot and I believe I am a safer driver from it.

I would encourage all drivers to do an Advance Driving Course, I really must get myself booked into it.

By far the closest moment to an insane death.
I was driving back home from a long night of street drag racing at Shepparton in my 1985 Ford Fairmont XF Ghia.
On the way back to Wangaratta I reached speeds in excess of 200km.
A mate of mine insisted we take a lap of the main street before taking him home.
As we cruised the street he asked me what the banging noise was and after turning the cd player off I too could hear the noise and quickly pulled to the side of the road to investigate.
Immediately I thought it was the tailshaft but it was fine. So I rang my father, who prompted me to count the wheel nuts.
That was when I realised that the front passenger side wheel only had the small locking nut holding the wheel on!
Not only that but 2 of the studs that the nuts screw onto had completely snapped off altogether.
The reason the nuts came off was because I didn’t realise on alloy rims you have to really tighten them up. I was used to stock rims and they have locking nuts so it’s not a big problem.
